Virginia Cairo

Virginia L. Cairo, 99, of Kerhonkson, NY, passed away on October 5, 2017, after a long and happy life.

 Born in Bronx, NY on February 11, 1918, to the late Carlo and Luise Augustoni, Virginia was one of six children and a wonderful extended family.

Virginia was married to the late Warren L. Cairo and they raised their two sons, Warren R. and Robert, in the Kerhonkson of “yesteryear” a bustling community with busy stores and an active train.  A full-time mom for many years, Virginia later became a well-respected Secretary/Payroll Coordinator in the Rondout Central Schools business office.

Virginia enjoyed gardening, crocheting, playing cards, and coffee ice cream, but most of all, she loved spending time with family and friends. Among other community oriented activities, she was involved in bringing Our Lady of Lourdes Mission Church to Kerhonkson, planning penny socials and spaghetti dinners.  She also participated in the Kerhonkson-Accord First Aid Squad as a phone chain caller, Kerhonkson/Accord Jewish Seniors, AARP, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and Golden Age Senior Citizens of Ellenville.

Virginia is survived by her sons Warren (Claudia) Cape May, NJ, Robert (Deborah) Accord, NY, grandchildren, Christopher, Amy Beth, Jennifer, and Amanda Rose, and great-grandchildren, Matthew, Andrew, Tyler and Xander  and other family and friends.

Virginia is preceded in death by her husband, Warren L. Cairo, her five siblings, Margaret, Anthony, Elmer, Bob and Lawrence, her grandson, Robert R. Cairo and her daughter-in-law Mary Ann Cairo.

Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 14th from 10 am to 12 pm at Humiston Funeral Home, Kerhonkson. Mass will be celebrated immediately following (12:30 PM)  at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Burial of Virginia’s cremains will be in Fantinekill Cemetery at a later date.
