Minnie Poppel, a lifelong resident of Kerhonkson, died on July 17, 2023 at the age of 95. She was born in Kerhonkson on September 12, 1927; daughter of the late Abraham and Bella Berenbaum, and widow of the late Herbert Poppel who died in May of 2000.
Minnie always made her family feel special with her love, kindness, compassion, and support. Besides her full time job of raising her family, she worked at Brodsky’s dress shop in Ellenville, and the Ladies Shop at the Nevele Resort.
Minnie was very active in the local community along with her late husband Herb. She was a life member of the Kerhonkson Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary, member of the Kerhonkson Synagogue, and a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 8959 in Kerhonkson. She was named “Mother of the Year” in 1981 after her son Ira submitted a letter about her. It was a competition put on by the Ellenville BPO Elks Lodge 1971, and a dinner was had in her honor.
Minnie is survived by 9 children: Barry(FL), Rene(Grahamsville), Martin(FL), Ira(Kerhonkson), Ronald and his wife Shirley(Saratoga Springs), Norman and his wife Bernadette(Toms River), Lynn and her husband Jose(Monroe), Audrey and her husband Ken(PA), and Steve(Maine). She is also survived by her sisters Carol Pomerantz and her husband Leonard(Vero Beach, FL), Rozy Lucas and her husband Mike(Safety Harbor, FL), 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Lt. Col. Esai Berenbaum.
All are welcome to attend a visitation on Thursday, July 20th from 11AM-12PM at the H.B. Humiston Funeral Home in Kerhonkson. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 12PM in the funeral home with interment to follow at the Kerhonkson Synagogue Cemetery.
