M. Richard (Dick) Davenport of High Falls, passed away on January 10, 2024, with family nearby. Dick was born in Kingston NY on October 9, 1931, to Gertrude Woolsey Davenport and Maurice Davenport. He was a 1946 graduate of the High Falls Grade School, graduating in the top four of his class of four. He graduated from Kingston High School in 1950 and Middlebury College in Vermont in 1954 where he played varsity football and golf. Dick married his high school sweetheart Betty Flint on June 19, 1954, at the Fair Street Reformed Church and immediately began his U.S Army military service in Straubling, West Germany with the Fifth Armored, Victory Division. He returned to Marbletown in 1957 and joined his father and uncle at Walter Davenport & Sons (later Heritagenergy Inc.) in High Falls at the “feed mill” and office where he served as President for many years.
Dick was always active in the community, gratefully assisting the High Falls Fire Company as a Life Member, active in Scouting, especially Troop 16, and teaching Sunday school and serving on the consistory at the Marbletown Reformed Church. He and Betty and the family especially enjoyed golfing at Wiltwyck and Stone Dock, hiking the Catskills and the Gunks, skiing at Highmount, and multi-generational trips to Ocean City NJ.
In addition to his wife of 69 years Dick leaves behind four children; Jim (Nancy), Sue (Steve) Powers, Betsy (Nick) Rama, and David (Sherri); his grandchildren, Kate Collingbourne, Jay Davenport, Willis Davenport, Jennifer Powers, Jim Powers, Steven Powers, Jessica Powers, Tedd Rama, Emily Rama, Kasey Harrison and Lauren Davenport; and eight great grandchildren living in Hendersonville TN, Averill Park, Miller Place, and Middletown NY.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Ronald Tedd Davenport, sister and brother-in-law Patricia Hall and John P. Hall Sr., and nephews Harry D. Hall and Rich Hall.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Marbletown Reformed Church, 3750 Main St., Stone Ridge NY 12484.
A memorial service will take place at the Church on Saturday February 3, 2024. Visitation will begin at 12 noon with the service at 1:00 pm. Private interment will follow at Benton Bar Cemetery.
