John James Smith

John J Smith, affectionately known as JJ and Smitty, was born on August 31, 1955, and passed away peacefully on October 17, 2024, at his home in Kerhonkson, New York. He was surrounded by his loving family: his wife, Delilah Bilelo-Smith, his daughter Amanda Smith, and his son Philip Bilelo.

John was a retired correctional officer, remembered for his dedication and strength. He was predeceased by his parents, Agnes Frances Benvenuta and John Woodrow Smith, as well as his beloved son, John Douglas Smith.

John leaves behind his wife, Delilah Bilelo-Smith; daughter Amanda Smith; son Philip Bilelo; grandson Jaxen Cruz-Bilelo; his brother Frank Smith; and sisters Debra Poye, Karen Cavaness and Janice Benvenuta. He will also be deeply missed by his aunt Elizabeth Dibble, uncle George Cerillo, and several cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

John’s adventurous spirit was undeniable. He was an avid outdoorsman who found joy in taking long rides on his Harley and made lifelong memories during his 33 years of annual hunting trips to Kampsville, Illinois, with close friends. His fishing trips with Nick and Jack were among his happiest moments, and he treasured those adventures deeply.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on November 2, 2024, from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at QWL Hall, located at 750 Berme Road, Napanoch, New York 12458.

His family and friends will forever remember his warmth, humor, and love for life. Though gone from this world, John’s memory will continue to ride on with those who knew and loved him.
