Charles Virgil Kelsey, Jr., ‘Charlie’, 90, of Kerhonkson, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2020. He was born on March 27, 1930, in Esopus, and raised in Samsonville. He was the son of the late Charles and Ester (Shurter) Kelsey. He married Susie Churchwell of Kerhonkson.
Charlie worked in construction running heavy equipment and was a very talented operator. During his career he worked in the construction of the Rondout Reservoir, roads, bridges and new homes. In addition to construction he was the Town of Rochester dog warden for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing and being active outside and later in life was passionate about his Native American background. He enjoyed the Native American traditions and attended many powwows and ceremonies. To his Metis Tribe Charlie was known by his given name 'Greywolf'. A name he was very proud of.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was predeceased by his wife Susie in 2001, a son, Thomas Kelsey, a brother, Gerald Kelsey, a sister, Irene Tompkins, and a son-in-law, John Gaal. Charlie is survived by a sister, Thelma Miller of Florida; his children; June Kelsey of St. Remy, Darlene Kelsey Gaal of Port Ewen, Charlene Kelsey of Kingston and Griffin Kelsey (Deborah), of Kerhonkson; his grandchildren; Stacy Alexander, Allan Alexander, Charles Kelsey, Griffin Kelsey Jr, Deanna Gaal and Joshua Alexander; and several great grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, December 31st from 9:00am-10:30am at H.B. Humiston Funeral Home, Kerhonkson. Funeral services will begin at 10:30am followed by burial at Krumville Cemetery.
